FRAMEWORK

135 is named for the first 3 shots played by a server in a rally. Rally length data is vital to measuring player performance and patterns of play, but it’s only valuable if you’re measuring using shot sequence.

Traditional rally length data is broken down by ranges like 0-4, which doesn’t provide any context to the individual player, just that the rally was short, medium or long (0-4, 5-8 and 9+).

Instead of using traditional rally length, we use:

  • 135 – serve profile
  • 246 – return profile
  • 7+ – long rally profile

Using the 135 framework enables us and our partner coaches to educate players on how tennis is actually played. It also allows us to measure a player’s matchplay metrics over time, rather than relying solely on results alone.

There is so much more to the 135 Framework than that. Part of 135’s role is to help educate players on the framework and then apply it to the way they play.

ANALYSIS

There’s a huge difference between “analytics” and “analysis”. You need experts in the field of analysis to understand what the data is telling you……in any industry! Coaches, players and parents all benefit from having raw data, but 135 needs to analyze what players are doing on the match court.

The 135 Framework helps us put the numbers into context for the player, but 135 is not “set-and-forget” tech. A level of analysis by a 135 expert is required.

PROCESS

When a child attends school, there’s an expectation that their academic performance will be reported on a regular basis. This not only shows parents, teachers and students the results, but also puts the information into a reporting format for all parties to understand the student’s level at a given point in time, and displays their improvement over time.

Tennis has never had such a system of improvement. Why? Because there’s never been a way of quantifying that improvement.

By profiling, benchmarking and measuring a player’s matchplay systematically every quarter, coaches, parents and players will know precisely what areas of a player’s game require more work, as well as the things they do well.

TEAM

135 is part of your player’s team. We only work with players through their coach, never independent of the coach. This is largely due to the mixed messages that can get delivered to players; one by 135 and one by the player’s coach.

PURPOSE

Part of the 135 process of improvement requires a player to analyze one of their own matches. This is done by watching a match inside the 135 Analyzer and recording the data using the 135 App at the same time. This is done each quarter after 135 has generated reporting etc.

Recording analytics while watching gives the player meaning. Doing it after reports are generated means they will be looking for the areas discussed by their 135 expert. Visual learning is a key component of the 135 process.

TECHNOLOGY

135 develops and owns its software, and has developed the 135 Camera and Mount for filming matches. All our systems are designed to be as simple as possible to support a process, not be the limit of what we do.

135 App

135 Analyzer

135 Camera

The 135 App is used to record and upload the analytics of matches – with or without footage. Players, parents and coaches have access such that matches can be recorded between formal reporting periods.

The 135 Analyzer is where all data and footage is uploaded. The Analyzer allows 135, players, parents and coaches to filter footage by certain metrics, and is also where all player reporting is generated and saved.

The 135 Camera has been specifically built for tennis. Lower file sizes, one file rather than many, compact with a battery that lasts for at least one match. Simple to upload footage direct to the 135 Analyzer.
